The Audacity of Zero

“Every new product starts at zero customers. Our president explains why it takes courage to launch anyway, and why small numbers teach us more than big ones.”

Every new product starts with the same number: zero.

Zero customers. Zero sales. Zero users. For many people, this number is scary. So they wait. They add one more feature. They fix one more small thing. They say, "We are not ready yet."

I think this is a mistake.

Waiting feels safe, but it is not

When you hide your product, you feel safe. No one can say no to you. No one can say your idea is bad. But you also learn nothing.

You can spend a whole year building something that nobody wants. And you will only find out on launch day.

Zero is not a failure. It is a start.

Eric Ries wrote about this idea in his book The Lean Startup. He calls it "the audacity of zero." It takes courage to show your product to the world when the numbers are very small. But this is where real learning begins.

Small numbers are useful

Say five people try your product, and none of them come back. That tells you something important.

It is much better to learn this now, with five people, than later, with a big team and a big budget.

Be careful with big numbers

Big numbers can lie. Many sign-ups look good, but they do not prove that people love your product.

Ask better questions:

  • Do people come back?
  • Do they use it again next week?
  • Would they pay for it?

These answers matter more than any big total.

What I ask of our team

  1. Launch early, even if it is not perfect.
  2. Watch what people do, not only what they say.
  3. Measure what matters, not what looks nice.
  4. Treat every "no" as a lesson, not an insult.

Let us begin

Starting from zero takes courage. But every big company once had zero customers too. The only difference is that they were brave enough to start.

So let us begin.
